This comes a day late, I realize. Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of Jim Morrison’s death.
I happened to see a video on Nik Nak’s Old Peculiar, posted in his memory.
It occurred to me that Jim Morrison and the Doors were hardly representative of the bands of their time. Keep in mind, the late 1960s and early 1970s were all about peace, love and dope. Flower power. Whatever.
In fact, this video bears more resemblance to an old black and white film noir than a typical pop music video of the time.
Anyway, take a look. Please note the night photography, the squalid urban streets, the desperate facial expressions, the fast-moving cars, the open road, the stark black and white imagery … to me, it all screams noir.
Oh, yeah, and happy Fourth of July, by the way!
Enjoy!

Loved this – but I love Jim Morrison

I’m glad you liked it. I’m also a big fan.

You’re right, Debbi. The doors’ video looks very noir. BTW hope you had a good 4 July. Though as a Brit I should decry the very date!

I spent most of the day putting the final touches on Book 3 in the series before I sent the final chapters to my writers group. Glad to have that done! Talk about celebrating independence.

Did you ever see THE PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE? It came out in 74, I think and showed the dark undercurrents running through the music of the time. It’s contemporary with the rise of bands like Black Sabbath and KISS.
Plus, it’s alternately hilarious and disturbing, one of my favorite mixes.

No, I haven’t. It sounds interesting. I’ll have to check that out. Thanks!
